Ventures

Businesses I have started and run. Some are live, some are closed. I have learned more from these than from anything else I have worked on.

The problem

Planning a golf trip for a group is a mess. You are trying to find courses near each other, somewhere to stay that works for everyone, and food that is not an afterthought. Most people end up with ten browser tabs and a group chat that goes nowhere.

Approach

I built Flagstick Finder with a friend to put the whole trip in one place. You pick a destination and it finds courses close together, hotels nearby, and places to eat, all at the same prices you would get booking direct.

We partnered with Expedia, so bookings run through them and we earn commission on what gets booked. That means no inventory and no payments to handle on our end, which let us launch without capital.

I built the site and handle everything on the web side. I have also been cold calling golf courses to get them on board directly.

Where it stands

Live at flagstickfinder.com. We are building it out into a full app with a shared scorecard, side games, and a trip long Ryder Cup format. The course partnerships are in progress.

The idea

An ecommerce store selling products that make life easier for moms. Mini vacuums, sleep masks, small practical things people actually use.

Approach

I registered the business, built the store on Shopify, and sourced products through Alibaba, Walmart, and Amazon. I went into Shopify’s HTML and CSS to change how the store actually looked instead of settling for the theme defaults. I made sales, but I never had a budget for ads and I did not market it enough.

Where it stands

Closed. I shut it down and filed everything properly with New York State. Between school, running the Business Analytics Club, and looking for full time work, I did not have the time it needed. I also came around to the fact that the products were not strong enough to sell themselves.

What I took from it

I learned how ecommerce works end to end. Sourcing, listing, pricing, fulfillment, and the tax and registration side that nobody talks about. I learned the exact steps of dropshipping.

The biggest thing was simpler than I expected. You do not sell a product by putting it in front of people. You sell it by showing them why it is worth having. I was doing the first part and not the second.
